Fireworks CS3/ CS4 Essentials Course
Upcoming Classes | Course Outline
Course Description
Fireworks allows you to add interactivity to your web graphics to create links, create JavaScript rollover buttons and animated gifs. It also allows you to optimise web graphics to shrink the file size without sacrificing quality.
Another option is that you can work with both vector and bitmap features together. Fireworks is the Adobe application solution to these and many more situations.
Fireworks is primarily a design application for screen graphics —however you can export to applications such as FreeHand and Illustrator, and therefore reuse graphics designed in Fireworks for print purposes.

Essentials
Save time throughout the Web desing process with using the essential features—slicing, behaviours, export settings and optimisation.
Preview all your work, including rollovers, without leaving the workspace, and compare files as they would be exported.
Use the Button Editor to create rollover buttons without any prior design experience. Build Java Script pop-up menus quickly and easily with just one dialog box.
Drawing with Fireworks
Fireworks blurs the distinction between vector graphics and bitmap image graphics. Objects drawn in Fireworks have editable vector paths, yet magnifying a Fireworks object reveals pixels, which redraw in response to vector editing.
Drawing path objects is the default mode creating artwork with paths and anchor points. You can also draw, paint, and edit pixels using traditional bitmap techniques like painting and masking.
Slicing images
Slicing is the key to incorporating large or complex images with many elements into a web site. Slicing allows you to slice or divide up a large image into smaller pieces — a bit like a jigsaw puzzle. Why? First of all, large single images take longer to download. But slicing is also used to allow separate areas of the image to be optimised differently (ie. combine jpeg and gif in the same image), to attach different links to a slice so that the user is taken to a new page/ site (ie. navigation), to section off animation areas and to create rollovers.
Optimising
The ultimate goal in Web graphic design is to create great looking images that download as fast as possible. Optimisation settings apply only to exported images. Therefore, you can work freely through the creative process of design without worrying too much about limiting colour usage or applying effects. Then compare optimisation settings that are best for your image when you are ready to export.
Creating animation
Animated graphics add life to your Web site. You can create a variety of lively animated GIFs in Fireworks using techniques like frame-by-frame animation and Tween animation.
