Course Description
Students follow 15+ examples and complete exercises to explore Illustrator’s most important features such as drawing, creating logos and graphics, creating special effects, manipulating type, creating charts and producing complex fashion & architectural designs. Graphics can then be used for importing into InDesign and Photoshop or saved for web/ multimedia use.

2 Day Illustrator Essentials
Tools & Workspace
Familiarisation with Illustrator’s most used tools. Create custom workspaces to work more efficiently.
Shape Tools & Selections
Basic principles when creating shapes such as rectangles, circles,
polygons, stars, etc and manipulate into more complex objects.
Selection
processes – why and when to use which technique.
Working with fills
and strokes.
Transforming objects: duplicating, scaling, rotating,
shearing and complex options. Working with layers. Aligning objects.
Colour & Gradients
Creating swatches: CMYK, RGB, Spot, Global/ Non Global by using the Color / Swatches and Swatch Library features. Creating gradient fills. Use eyedropper to sample colour. Blending and Gradient Meshes for complex morphing and airbrush effects.
Working with Paths
Use the pen tool to create complex drawings using straight and curved lines, and cusps. Editing paths, selecting and editing anchor points, aligning anchor points. Manipulating points and segments using the direct selection tool. Also freehand drawing with pen and pencil tools. Best methods for selecting, editing and duplicating etc.
Pathfinder
Combine, isolate and sub-divide objects. Using Pathfinder commands, such as Add, Exclude, Divide, Trip, Merge, Crop, Outline etc. Exploring Compound Paths to create transparent areas.
Live Color
Quickly create new colour combinations which can be tested and then saved for re-use. Apply colour in one go to multiple areas of your document.
Live Trace
Allows you to convert existing scanned files or raster images to a vector orientated path.
Drawing with Brushes
Using Illustrator’s Brushes: Calligraphic, Scatter, Art and Pattern.
Masking
Create masked areas to display only portions of objects or pictures.
Creating Patterns & Symbols
Using and modifying Illustrators default patterns and looking at setting up and creating your own.
Transparency, Filters and Effects
Adjusting the opacity of an object. Distorting objects or type by applying special effects or filters.
Blending
Blends multiple objects by colour and shape.
Creating and Formatting Type
Creating type for special effects, creating area type, kerning, tracking, leading, styles, glyphs, working with paragraphs. Threading text boxes and working with columns.
Flowing type along a path, placing type inside a path. Creating outlines – converting type to paths.
Exporting Artwork from Illustrator
Finished artwork can be exported for use in other applications or saved for placement in other applications such as Photoshop, Flash or InDesign or copied and pasted directly into InDesign.
